Uefa Nations League
Venue: Estadio Benito Villamarín, Seville
Date: Monday, October 15
Kick-off: 7:45pm BST

Spain ruined England’s World Cup homecoming party by beating Gareth Southgate’s men 2-1 at Wembley, with La Roja now five points ahead of Croatia and the Three Lions in their Nations League group.

With both managers out to prove they can be contenders for top honours, Monday night’s match is the perfect opportunity to make a statement before the international break ends. While England are yet to win in the UEFA Nations League, Spain have won both of their matches and can secure top spot in the group with victory in Seville.
Head coach Luis Enrique has instilled a more direct approach since his appointment in the summer and has been rewarded with 12 goals in three matches.

“Their style is a little bit different now, they’ve got a new coach, a top coach,” said Southgate.
Although the style and the philosophy is very similar, tactically it’s a bit different. There is a bit more of a direct threat in the final third.

“It’s as big a test as you can get in European, if not world football, at the moment.”
England will be hoping to kick start their Nations League campaign when they travel to Seville to take on Spain on Monday.

Gareth Southgate’s men have taken just a single point from their opening two group games, with last week’s goalless draw against Croatia following on from an opening defeat against this same opposition.

Luis Enrique’s side also go into the game in impressive form having swept aside Wales in a friendly in Cardiff last Thursday.

England are currently second in the group but their match against the Croatians at Wembley next month is likely to decide which side gets relegated from the top tier of the competition.

As for England, they will be targeting to pick up a maiden victory in the UEFA Nations League following a 0-0 draw with Croatia. It was a strange atmosphere for the England side to play behind closed doors, denying fans the chance to watch the Three Lions. Although a bunch of England supporters did manage to watch the game from the vantage point of a nearby hill.

Although the few fans would be disappointed by the game, which failed to hit the heights of their World Cup semi-final just three months ago. Both Eric Dier and Harry Kane hit the woodwork, whilst Marcus Rashford was guilty of missing two clear chances which he really should have scored from.

Despite the flat nature of the night in Rijeka, England boss Garth Southgate can be encouraged by the performances of Ben Chilwell at left-back and the late cameo of Jaden Sancho who troubled a tiring Croatia backline on the wing. The Borussia Dortmund star now has a genuine chance of starting in Spain for the Three Lions.

Harry Maguire could have a crucial role to play if England is to come away with all three points. The Leicester City defender has firmly established himself as one of the first names on Gareth Southgate’s team sheet.

Spain currently is the leading goal scorers in the UEFA Nations League, and Maguire will have to be at his very best if Spain is not to score for the first time in 26 internationals. Whilst the 25-year old is also a major threat at set pieces for the Three Lions.
